Three Answers to the Question How to Paint Baseboards with Carpet

Since all know how expensive getting professional painters, we opt for doing DIY painting for all walls. But, since not all of us are born with a good hand. Painting jobs at home can spell trouble for us. It is even harder when doing our trims or baseboards with carpeted floor.

The good news is there are methods that can make this activity bearable. There is no need to call in the experts because here are the answers to your question how to paint baseboards with carpet.

    1. Use A Strong Masking Tape

If a buying a painter’s tape is out of the budget, you can always use a masking tape for this job. What you need to remember is that you have to use a strong masking tape that will hold its ground. The tape should continue to stick to the carpet throughout. But, it should also not ruin it when removed.

In using the masking tape, you need to roll and tape it down on the part where the baseboard meets the carpet flooring. You have to leave an extra part of the tape, which will later be inserted between the baseboard and the carpet.

Using a putty, a knife or any thin solid material, you push the remaining tape in the small space between the carpet and the baseboard. It will ensure that all areas of the carpet are covered to prevent the paint from tainting it.

You can now start painting your baseboards. However, you have to be mindful that the tape is a little thin. Thus, you need to exert care when painting.

But, if you want a more professional painting job, you can use a painter’s tape. Since it is designed for this purpose, it provides sharper line and it is also easier to place and remove.

    2. With A Spackle Knife

Using a spackle knife is another way you can paint the baseboards without smearing some of the carpets. You don’t have to place a tape over your carpet, instead, you can paint around using this tool.

If you search for a “spackle knife”, the results will come up with a putty knife or a spatula. The results are actually correct because a spackle may also be known as a putty knife to some. But, to be more accurate, you can look for a spackle knife because it is usually wider than the putty knife we know.

The spackle is an alternative to the masking tape method. It is easier and with lesser effort. You can directly proceed with the painting simply by sticking the blade of the knife in the space between the trim or baseboard and the carpet.

Instead of the tape that you place on the edges, you can simply insert the knife. After which, you are free to paint. However, the problem with this method is that you need to make sure that there will be no paint dripping from the knife. Also, unlike the tape, the spackle knife is not very long. Therefore, you need to be careful in moving from side to side.

    3. Using a plastic wrap (Saran)

Aside from being a good food covering, a plastic wrap or Saran is also a useful tool when painting. Interestingly, the plastic or Saran wrap was first used not on food. It was discovered by Ralph Wiley in 1933 while cleaning beakers in Dow Chemical. The beaker was tainted with a particle which was later on named “eonite,” which was used to protect fighter planes and combat boots.

The plastic wrap can, therefore, be a strong protector against smeared paint aside from food contaminants. There are two ways to go about using the Saran. You can use it immediately like a masking tape or you can use it with a masking tape.

Similar to the tape, you can tuck in the wrap on the area where the baseboard and the carpet meets. You can again use your putty knife to tuck it in. Once the wrap is securely placed, you can start painting the baseboard or trim.

However, the wrap can also be used with the masking tape. First, you have to tuck in the tape. The Saran will then be placed on the opposite side of the tape. In order to secure the wrap from moving, it should be taped on the tape or the carpet. The key is ensuring that the wrap will not move.

The essence of having a tape before the wrap is to secure the wrap. It can also give a wide coverage. Hence, it will be easier for you to move around.

    Final Thought

Now, you are ready to paint the house red or any color for that matter with these convenient methods that will save you lots of buck from getting professional painters. You can even combine all three means to make the job more safe from the disaster of spilling paint on your carpet.
